When to Update Your Custody Map

A custody map is a photograph of a moment. These events should trigger an update within thirty days:

Residential move — Even if the safe moved intact, the address context for trusted contacts changed.

New hardware wallet — Adds a device row and often shifts which unit stays portable.

Marriage, divorce, or executor change — Emergency brief recipients must match current legal reality.

Bank box opening or closure — Branch and box number references go stale quickly.

Death in the family — When a relative held a backup copy, succession of who may access their home matters.

Passphrase rotation — You need not record the new passphrase, but the map should note that tier B was rotated in March 2026 so nobody retrieves an obsolete envelope.

Annual reviews catch slow drift; event-driven updates catch shocks. Combining both is cheaper than reconstructing from memory after a fire or hospital stay.
